AM – Rotation Reflection

How could the knowledge I’ve gained here be applicable in other rotations/disciplines?

The knowledge I’ve gained from this rotation can be applied globally to other rotations as well. For instance, I learned that every practitioner has a particular way of practicing and the way they manage even the simplest diseases. Applying this knowledge to other rotations can greatly help me predict what the preceptors will decide to do next. It will also help me to develop and properly choose an efficient and well-rounded way of practicing medicine.

Skills or situations that are difficult for you (e.g. presentations, focused H&Ps, performing specific types of procedures or specialized interview/pt. education situations) and how you can get better at them

One of the skills which I discovered was difficult for me was being able to justify my treatment plans. After presentations when the preceptor would like to know my treatment plans and justification is when I am unable to properly back up my decisions. I believe that I can improve upon this by making sure that I properly think through my reasons for pursuing a particular action. Once I get into this habit, I believe that it can greatly improve the care that I provide the patient.

Managing new types of patients and the challenges that arise from that

One of the new type of patients that I have come across during this rotation are the ones that come seeking care and expecting the providers to immediately make them feel better. Unfortunately, this creates many challenges since it creates a feeling of receiving improper care on the patient’s side wanting them to not seek care from the same provider again. It also puts the provider in a tough spot since they would like to help the patients as much as possible, but some diseases are not easily treatable and require the patient’s cooperation and patience as well.

What do you want to improve on for the following rotations? What is your action plan to accomplish that?

There are still many different things I would like to improve on in the following rotation. One particular skill is being able to properly support my treatment plans during my presentations instead of getting nervous when I am asked why I chose to a particular treatment or symptomatic relief medication over another. My plan is to build my treatment plan around what the patient requires in order to feel better as well as helping to treat their disease. Also I can improve on this skill by taking a few extra seconds to think of a well-constructed answer before stating the first reason that comes to mind.
