This article was chosen based on the patient I got the opportunity to help treat with migraine headaches. As I was researching more about migraine headaches, I came across this article and it caught my attention based on the potential impact it can have. This article’s main objective is to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and tolerability of noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation in order to prevent chronic migraine attacks. The study was conducted as a randomized prospective, multicentered, double blind study for patients with chronic migraines. The article found that out of the fifty-nine participants tolerability was similar for both vagus nerve stimulation and control. Additionally, the safety profile for vagus nerve stimulation was found to be safe and therapy with vagus nerve stimulation was seen to be effective with persistent prophylactic use. With the persistent prophylactic use the number of headache days in chronic migraines were seen to be reduced. In conclusion, this research helped to prove that vagal nerve stimulation can be effective and a safe method to aid patients dealing with chronic migraines but further research with bigger samples sizes and higher levels of evidence are needed.
